Goals
This event is being called to address interoperability between social networks.
The goal of the Data Sharing Summit is to get a number of the key players, developers and platforms in the social networking, blogging and associated 'social software' platforms togeher in one room and hash out a bunch of key issues:
- interop testing between disparate systems
- standardized schemas, protocols and APIs
- mapping to proprietary platforms
- on-going efforts, including worldwide meetings
Background
Kaliya Hamlin aka [http://www.identitywoman.net">Identity Woman</a> stepped up to facilitate, she has had a lot of experience over the last few years - helping professional communities working to solve real world problems get stuff done with their face time. One very successful example is the The Internet Identity Workshop which will have its 5th 'conference' this fall.
We don’t want to confuse our event with some hackathon or place to talk about code. We’ll talk about schemas, protocols, RPC routines, usage scenarios and sponsorship efforts. We’ll mostly about discussing interop, what standards to persue and get a bunch of us together who all share the same goals.
The emphasis is on vendors who can implement these standards in their social networks and social web tools. We love individuals, we're all individuals - but unless you can do something directly to help - we'd prefer it if......... well let's just say - we love individuals.
Richmond, CA is 3 cities north of Berkeley on the East Bay - yes this is a bit out of the way but it means folks really committed to coming will come.
Did you know that Ning enables you to export your entire network's worth of user data and content? Kudos to Marc, Gina, Diego and the whole team at Ning! We've set up a Facebook group - which has over 300 members. I've started message forum threads around each topic area. Please feel free to start whatever you want here - as well. Kim Cameron (of Microsoft) reports on some user-centric identity Interop testing done by the Burton Group. This is what WE need for our interop to suceed - extensive testing!
Marc Canter posts on The Chess Game of Social Networking. d
