From Data Sharing Summit

Contents

Use Cases

  • Social proximity of X to Y on your network
  • Import/Export account
  • Sync/Mirror account
  • I am NOT this person
  • One person with multiple personas
  • X on your network may see my birthday but Y on your network may not.
  • ...and granular: DD/MM; DD/MM/YYYY
  • My group wants to move to/leave from your network
  • My group describes things differently than your group and wants to find the intersection

Presence Interop, including Rich Presence and OpenCallerID

  • Collective presence - do we have a quorum now
  • Faceted presence - what is shared with whom under what conditions
  • Presence attributes and dimensions - not just availability or "twits" but the whole range of signals we send
  • Presence federation - as with weblog ping mesh syndication
  • Presence prediction - given what is public about a person, can we predict that person's status and availaiblity?

Bad things that can happen with a public social graph

Dare Obasanjo has some interesting things to say about this:

Put the user in control otherwise things fall apart

And there's a controversy right now about Quechup.

Take a look at how Plaxo has changed - from where they were 3 years ago - to today.

Social Graph Escrow - for when your host shuts down or changes TOS

Brad and David's SNAP and OFF

SNAP (Social Network Aggregation Protocol) and OFF (Open Friend Format) are two names that have been associated with Brad Fiztpatrick and David Recordon's visionary proposal.

Here's the original white paper.

Here's Dave McClure's roundup of related links.

Marc Canter has posted some initial feelings, and he's also placed Brad's proposal into an Identity Stack - as well as collected other ideas and feedback on it - as well.

Then there's a bunch of posts that Dare Obasanjo has posted on this proposal - as well.

The Open Friend Project This is the home for info on how FOAF's get OFF on SNAP.

Interop Testing

How do we know if various vendors implementation of OpenID is compatible with each other?

Is there anybody testing Interop for OpenID?

Facebook App for OpenID

Social Network Portabiliy politics

Kim Cameron (of Microsoft) blogged about recent results of the Burton Group's efforts (at a conference called 'Catalyst')at doing user-centric identity interop testing. We should be doing this!

Maybe we can get the Burton Group to do this for OpenID?

There have been plenty of interop testing events and there are plenty fo organizations and entities which do this sort fo stuff - as their living. We need to get these folks to start testing OpenID interoperability.

Opt-in Controls

I (Marc Canter) created a post suggesting that we need opt-in controls

Check it out. Its called '[http://blog.broadbandmechanics.com/2007/08/today-is-steve-cases-birthday Today is Steve Case's birthday'. This post also goes over basic privacy concerns in this sort of shared profile environment.

OpenID Attribute Exchange

Higgins and XDI

Standard for moving entire social networks of data around>=

Valuation of social networks to allow data exchange

What's the status of the php libraries for the Attribute Exchange?

Privacy

  • Discussion about privacy issues. The Alpha Geeks don't care if a huge white pages is built from public data. Unfortunately other people do. There are also issues with data leakage. I may not mind being associated with you within Facebook. I may not want that information to be transferred to LinkedIn.

Building a Universal ID translator

  • What is the Skype ID for this Twitter ID?

Efforts behind merging microformats and OpenID

Open Discussion on open standards efforts

  • What is XDI and what role can it play in portability of social graph data?
  • Enabling sites to publish their identity schemas so others can know what formats they import/export - using RDFa.

Mobility - location integration (GPS/Cell Site & WiFi Site Mapping ala Navizon)

  • For Mobility (RobertFiccaglia):
  • use cases: what is the user going to do with location (now that I know "where you at?", why do I care?
  • sharing: who is watching me and why? Can I revoke permission? how do the carrier networks protect this data (more than just limiting vendors?) SHOULD they protect this data or is it mine to control?
  • marketing: I don't want location based SPAM, I want location based services, but developers and companies need to see money to invest resources and time; what are the users willing to tolerate? or better yet, what to they WANT to see in terms of marketing approaches?
  • other than location, what are other essential mobile social use cases? photo ul/dl? music ul/dl? blogging? twittering? (uh....voice calling? naaaah!)
  • One click photo geotagging. Take the photo, tag it with location, post it to Flickr, with one click.

Rich/Automated Presence

  • online, on phone, cell phone on, Bluetooth, selective (eg Attention filtering, above)==
  • Do Exactly What they tell you not to do - Link to ALL! Link to who you know or to who you want to know?
  • Is this what Twitter and Pownce are?
  • "Where are you now?" application to mirror and enhance Twitter's "what are you doing now?". With display of  where are my friends and serendipity  functions. eg PaulWalsh is also in Adam Street

Marc Canter got this all started with this Blog post and this one about Open Standards for Social Networking. Many of the potential topics are covered there. There is also a series of message forum threads on our Facebook group.
